Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about making custom Magic: The Gathering cards with SpellForge.
Getting Started
What is SpellForge?
SpellForge is a free online custom Magic: The Gathering card maker powered by AI. You can design cards with authentic MTG frames, generate unique card art and text using AI, organize cards into deck boxes, and export print-ready sheets — all from your browser. Learn more on our How It Works page.
Is SpellForge free to use?
Yes! The card designer is completely free to use. You can create cards, customize frames, edit text, and save to deck boxes at no cost. AI art and text generation uses credits, which you can purchase on the pricing page. You get started without needing an account — just open the card designer and start building.
Do I need an account to make custom cards?
You can try the card designer without an account. To save your cards, use AI generation, create deck boxes, or share your designs, you'll need to sign up. Registration is free and takes seconds.
AI Card Generation
How does the AI card art generation work?
SpellForge uses AI image generation to create unique card illustrations based on your card's name, type, and colors. Each generation produces completely original artwork — no two cards are ever the same. The AI is tuned to produce art in styles that complement Magic: The Gathering card frames.
Can the AI write rules text and flavor text?
Yes. The AI can generate mechanically appropriate rules text and thematic flavor text for your card. It understands Magic: The Gathering card design conventions, keyword abilities, and templating style. You can always edit the generated text to fine-tune it.
What are credits and how do they work?
Each AI card generation (art, rules text, or flavor text) costs one credit. Credits never expire once purchased. You can buy credit packs on the pricing page. One credit equals one unique card generation.
Can I use the generated art and cards outside SpellForge?
Cards you create are yours to use for personal, non-commercial purposes such as custom cubes, kitchen-table play, and fan art. The AI-generated art is unique to your card. Please review our Terms of Service for full details on usage rights.
Card Design and Editing
What card frames and styles are available?
SpellForge includes authentic-style card frames for all five Magic colors (White, Blue, Black, Red, Green), multicolor, colorless, and artifact cards. The visual editor lets you customize frame colors, text styling, and layout to match your creative vision.
Can I make a complete custom set or cube?
Absolutely. Create multiple cards and organize them into deck boxes. Each deck box acts as a collection, making it easy to build a custom set, cube, or themed deck. You can share entire deck boxes publicly for others to browse on the homepage.
Printing and Sharing
How do I print my custom Magic cards?
SpellForge exports your cards as high-resolution print sheets sized for standard trading card sleeves. Download the sheet, print it on cardstock at home or at a local print shop, cut out the cards, and sleeve them in front of a basic land or bulk common. They'll look great at the table.
Can I share my cards with other people?
Yes! Set any deck box to "public" and it gets a shareable link. Public deck boxes also appear in the community gallery on the homepage where other SpellForge users can browse and admire your creations.
Are custom cards legal for tournament play?
Custom cards created with SpellForge are for casual, personal use only — they are not legal in official Wizards of the Coast sanctioned tournaments. They're perfect for custom cubes, casual kitchen-table games, commander variants, and fan content.
